OREGON TRAIL STAGE-RACE TRAINING PLANS

A 16-WEEK TRAINING PLAN DESIGNED TO HELP YOU MEET THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF YOUR 5-DAY GRAVEL ADVENTURE

The Oregon Trail Gravel Stage Race is a uniquely demanding five-day, point-to-point event that rewards preparation, durability, and smart execution. To help athletes arrive confident and ready, Special Blend Endurance Coaching has developed 16-week Oregon Trail Training Plans that guide you from early spring through race week.

You can choose from either the Settler Route or the Pioneer Route Plan. These plans are designed to elevate your riding and racing and enhance your experience during race week!

The plan kicks off Monday, March 23, and carries you all the way through the final stage of the Oregon Trail. It is delivered directly to your TrainingPeaks account (compatible with both free and premium versions), making it easy to follow, adapt, and execute alongside your existing training tools.

Start date: March 23, 2026

Delivery: March 1, 2026, or upon purchase

Training plan will be delivered to your Training Peaks account March 1, 2026

This plan is designed for athletes who, AT THE START OF THE PLAN (MARCH 23, 2026)

Settler Plan

  • Are riding 6–8 hours per week

  • Are completing a 2-3 hour ride once per week

Pioneer Plan

  • Are riding 8-10 hours per week

  • Are completing a 3+ hour ride once per week

Both Plans

  • Have access to and regularly ride a gravel bike

  • Can train 4–5 days per week, with 2 rest or active recovery days

  • Have no major injury limitations affecting climbing, sustained efforts, or back-to-back riding days

  • Are willing to practice fueling, hydration, pacing, and gravel skills during training; not just on race day

  • For athletes who want individualized guidance, Special Blend Endurance Coaching offers hourly one-on-one consults to address personal training needs, race strategy, pacing, nutrition, and execution.

TRAINING PLAN STRUCTURE

Weekly Structure

  • 2 rest or active recovery days

  • 2 structured workouts

  • 3 endurance and/or long rides

Simulation Weekends

  • Two dedicated simulation weekends with back-to-back-to-back long rides

  • Focus on fueling, hydration, pacing, and recovery under fatigue

Volume Guidelines

Settler Plan

  • Average weekly volume: ~8 hours

  • Maximum weekly volume: 11.5 hours

  • Biggest volume weeks: May 18, May 25, June 1

Pioneer Plan

  • Average weekly volume: ~10 hours

  • Maximum weekly volume: 13.5 hours

  • Biggest volume weeks: May 18, May 25, June 1
