What makes Special Blend unique is the blend is those glorious gravel roads, the ratio of coaches to students, and the level of service back at the hotel. In no other situation can I focus on only my riding. They take care of food, and bike things between rides, social time, and classes. My only job was to ride my bike and enjoy myself. -Shannon Herriges, SBG Gorge 22 camper
Special Blend Gravel camp brought together an amazing group of coaches, stunning gravel rides, and a community of like-minded women that felt like an instant group of friends. The camp had so many fun surprises along the way—tire demos from Schwalbe, an on-site mechanic who was more than willing to clean bikes, morning lattes from “Rad Chad,” and ridiculously well-stocked aid/party stations during each ride. I felt like I was on a luxury cycling vacation with my close friends the entire time. -Laura Rosema, SBG Gorge 22 camper
I had the best bike weekend of my life, topped off by a 3rd place finish in my race at the Gorge Gravel Grinder Sunday in women over 45 (top three finishers were 52, 56, and 54 💪🏼) in a field of 36 women. I did that after riding nearly 100 miles and climbing almost 9000 feet Friday and Saturday at @specialblendgravel - a women’s gravel camp organized by @serenabg, pro gravel and MTB racer, incredible, warm, generous, kind human and dear friend & mentor to me. I spent the weekend learning from Serena and also my other dear cycling friend, hero, mentor, and fellow goofball @sarah_sturmy and drastically improved my descending skills (note: cowboy stance🤠) which I’m convinced helped me make the podium yesterday. I also met so many incredible women who also inspired me (thank you to @janelspilker who talked me up a 7-mile climb Saturday❤️) , laughed, ate, learned, saw gorgeous scenery, and was literally in my happy place all weekend even when my legs and crotch were burning. I met @sarah_sturmy and @serenabg through @oregontrail_gravelgrinder which is that crazy gravel stage race I did last June. These two women won the race (1st and 2nd, respectively). And so how does a 54-year-old mediocre amateur cyclist become friends with pros and call them mentors? Well, gravel cycling is one of the most welcoming sports I’ve ever experienced with some of the most generous, humble people, and women who support each other at the highest and lowest levels. Gravel camp embodied that for me. Thank you @serenabg and Chad and Colleen at Breakaway Productions for organizing this life changing experience. I ❤️ gravel!! -Lisa Congdon, SBG Gorge 22 camper
